Good | Bad | Rad #19 – On the road

A look back at some of the best, hardest and most surprising parts of my week.

The Good

Helpful People. I traveled to the Bay Area this week. Besides the plane ride, I also took MAX light rail, an airport shuttle, BART and CalTrain, not to mention a car ride from friends on either end. I did a little research up front, but I still had to ask a number of people for help and clarification, every person with only one exception was very helpful and gave me extra information to help me get where I wanted to go.

Being a Helpful Person. On the MAX ride in Portland, I had the opportunity to help someone, trying to get to her first day of work. The transit stops had just been changed and so a couple other passengers and I helped her figure it out. She called her new employer and shoved the phone at me, and I clarified the transit directions with them. It was great to be able to help her out.

Travel. It’s easy to forget how eye-opening travel is. I like getting out of my routine, seeing new things and places, revisiting places I haven’t been for years. It’s always a great perception shifting opportunity. It’s also fun to get to experience one of the reasons I took up running — to see places in a new way and get some training in.

Longtime Friends. There’s nothing like hanging out with people you’ve known for decades. The kind of friends that it doesn’t matter how long since you’ve seen each other, it’s like you’ve never been apart.

The Bad

Not Helpful People. Seems so strange that a person wearing an official uniform and name tag sitting under an information sign would be so reluctant to, oh I don’t know, provide useful information.

The Rad

Confirmation. When I’m working one-on-one with clients there’s a fair amount of feedback. With my calls and products, it can be more sporadic. I’m always thrilled to get an email from someone who listened to an Explore & Play class and found it useful, or just used Boring Change again and wanted to let me know how it’s helping.

It was an especially lovely surprise to be included in Margaret Lukens‘ post, “2012 Review – Experts I Learned From” over at New Leaf + Company.

And you?
